Congratulations Class of 2008!

Lots of cheers and whooping and hollering last night at the Coleman Coliseum as our graduating Class of 2008 took to the stage to accept their diplomas! Best of luck to all of you as you head out into the world!

The Westchester Theatre announces a new website and Summer Broadway Camp!

We are so excited to launch our new Westchester theatre website at www.waistheatre.com. Please check us out for upcoming events and news - summer camps information, auditions, photos and Peter Pan! We also have a new email address at waistheatre@yahoo.com.

Does your child love being on stage? Does your child love acting, singing, and dancing? If so, this is the perfect one week summer camp for your child! Westchester Theatre is offering a Summer Broadway camp open to ages 6-10. Children will have the opportunity to rehearse and showcase a musical to family and friends at the end of the week. Children will learn songs and dialogue from a classic children’s musical. Our own Westchester theatre and music students have volunteered to help and will be teaching the fun of singing, dancing and acting. The camp will run from 10am to 2pm on June 23 - 27th. Deadline to sign up is May 30th, so hurry! Visit our website for more details and registration at www.waistheatre.com.

Summer Math Camp for Upper School Students

The Math department is offering a Math Camp this summer. The camp will be held at the Westchester Academy campus on August 12 to 14 from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm. Deadline to sign up is on May 28th. Please see Mr. Halos or your Math teacher for details.

Just a few more notes as we wrap up the year...

8th Grade Celebration - Friday, May 23

The 8th grade Celebration will be held this Friday, May 23 in the auditorium. Parents are invited to brief reception following the event and then our 8th graders can dance the night away!

Italian Language Students Win Honors

Several Westchester Academy Italian students participated in the National Italian Examination. As the title implies, this test is given to Italian students during a set week throughout the United States for the purpose of determining outstanding performers. Mrs. Nizza, teacher, is proud to announce that three of the WAIS students placed in the Honorable Mention Category.

Angie Diaz, 14th place for Italian II

A little news...

Pamela Butler Accepts a New Position within the District

Did you get the letter? It's true! Our own Pamela Butler has accepted the position of Executive Director for Secondary Teaching and Learning in SBISD. We are very excited for her as she accepts this new challenge. It is simply amazing to look around Westchester and think that eight years ago, this school was but a concept within the district. Mrs. Butler took that concept and built this school. We are so proud and so fortunate to have had her at the helm.

The selection process for a new director for WAIS is already underway. These will be big shoes to fill -- figuratively, not literally! :)

Good luck Mrs. Butler with your new position! We are so very happy for you!

Upcoming Events

ComedySportz HSL vs. Westchester Faculty - May 13

Mark your calendars – Tuesday May 13th at 7:00 PM Westchester’s High School ComedySportz team is taking on a few brave Faculty members in a head to head match of improv comedy. We are calling for all our loyal fans to head back to school on Tuesday night at 7:00 to see your brave teachers and administration play your High School team. Tickets are $5.00 at the door!

General PTA Meeting and Upper School Awards Night - May 14

Join us Wednesday evening as we induct our Board of Directors for next year. This short PTA meeting will be followed by our Upper School Awards Night. The evening starts at 7.00pm in the auditorium.

Middle School Awards Assembly - May 15

Thursday morning, our middle school students will receive their awards during a morning ceremony in the auditorium. All proud parents and family members are invited to attend!

Student PTA Picnic - May 16

On Friday, the PTA will sponsor a free lunch for all students and faculty during normal lunch hours. Supplies are covered and we are looking for volunteers to help setup, serve and clean up after our little angels! :) Please let Jane Harris know if you can be there Friday to help us celebrate another great year!

Yearbooks are in!

The 2008 WAIS yearbook—the Miacis--has arrived and will be distributed on Friday, May 16.

Our yearbook is a words-and-pictures history of this year at WAIS, and your student is a big part of it. We still have a limited number of yearbooks available for $65. Yearbook forms are available online from the WAIS website and in the school offices.

We really appreciate your support!

Westchester has 3 Odyssey of the Mind teams advancing to World Finals at the end of May at the University of Maryland.

Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. Kids apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They then bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and World level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.

Our Westchester teams are:

Team members: All 11th graders: Cassie Hurst, David Glover, Matt McMullin Nicholas Wike, Calum Mitchell, Colin Gray, Michael Chiles.
This is the same team that is going to Hungary TOO!

For the Westchester teams heading to World Finals at the University of Maryland, you have reached the highest level of international competition because of your creativity, ideas, and teamwork. We wish you good luck and heartfelt thanks for making Odyssey of the Mind possible and representing Westchester at the World Finals!

Only 13 more days... but who's counting?? :)

Hey Wildcats,

Book Fair is here! Our Book Fair is open beginning today (Monday) in the library! We set up in the morning and will be ready for students and parents from 10:30 to 3:30 pm. Then, we'll be open 7:45 a.m. to 3:30 pm Tuesday through Thursday. We'll be open Tuesday night from 7:00-8:30 pm. Come on up! The summer reading books assigned for your child's grade will be there! Come support our library and enjoy great books!

Southwestern Book representative, Claudia Behm, will be at the Book Fair all week including Tuesday evening - she is a wealth of information - she's read a large percentage of the books and is a great resource if you're trying to get your child 'hooked' on a literary series.

Next General PTA meeting is Thursday, May 8, at 7pm in the library. At this time we will be nominating our board of directors for next year and taking additional nominations from the floor!

Have you thanked a teacher lately? This week is National Teacher Appreciation week. Let's show our faculty how much we appreciate all that they do. Send a quick email or card to one of your teachers and make their day!

The PTA is sponsoring a Teacher Appreciation Luncheon this Friday, May 9 in the Library. If you can donate time or money toward the event, please contact Carrie Alexander at CarrieJerry@comcast.net.

Next Board PTA meeting is Monday, May 12, at 6pm in the library. This will be our final opportunity to wrap things up for the year and prepare for 2008-2009.

Final General PTA meeting is Wednesday, May 14 at 7pm in the auditorium. Upper School Awards Night will immediately follow the very brief PTA meeting.

Picnics are coming on Friday, May 16! This is a chance for the PTA to serve up a free lunch to all our students and faculty. If you can bring items (everything is reimbursed by the PTA) or can help setup, serve or cleanup, we would love to have you!

Med Club Blood Drive a Success!

Dear Parents and Faculty,

The Med Club’s blood drive at Westchester turned out to be a huge success! By the end of the day, we received an astounding 83 pints of blood. I would like to congratulate all of our wonderful donors who were willing to face such a huge commitment and also the Med Club members, Dr. Sigworth, and the blood drive staff who made it all possible. We had an amazing and smooth turnout. Thank you to all!

Teachers now collecting raffle basket items!

Teachers are now collecting items for the different grade level baskets! Bring in your donation any day this week. Themes: 6th grade - Beach 7th grade - Texas 8th grade - Candyland (Games and candy) 9th grade - Spa and Sports 10th grade - Music 11th grade - Movie Night 12th grade - The Drivers Seat (Car and driving items) Baskets will be on display next week during lunch. Raffle tickets are $1 each and can be used toward the basket of your choice! Lets build some fun!

Senior Class Garage Sale Drop-off This Friday

We will be collecting items for the senior class garage sale booth this Friday from 7.30-8.30am. A drop-off table will be set up in the north parking lot for your convenience. Load up your car and swing on by! Thanks for helping the Class of 2008!

Westchester Academy for International Studies (WAIS) is hosting an International Fair and community garage sale Saturday, April 5 from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Westchester’s 4 Odyssey of the Mind teams are advancing to the State Finals

Odyssey of the Mind is a creative problem solving competition where teams of no more that 7 students select 1 of 5 problems to solve and demonstrate their solutions in front of a panel of judges. This year Westchester has 1 middle school team and 3 high school teams, all which placed in the top 2 in their division at the Houston Regional tournament held on March 8 and now will be advancing to the State finals on April 5th. Blood Drive at Westchester March 26

Westchester’s MedClub for Girls along with the Commit for Life Program is sponsoring a Blood Drive at the school March 26, 2008. The drive will run the entire day and is open for anyone 17 and older weighing at least 110 lbs. There will be a sign up this week at Westchester’s cafeteria during lunch for those interested, however, people may sign up the day of the drive.
