WAIS Wildcats Dance Team - Recruitment week

Come and visit us September 7, 8, and 9, from 3:15 to 5:30

See if you are interested in becoming a member of the wais wildcats dance team

The prep team is for girls with no prior experience who are looking to learn dance in multiple genres. Also, not quite ready to be committed, or are not technically advanced enough for the competitive team. Prep team members perform in both winter and spring shows. No audition is necessary.

The competitive team is for girls who are technically advanced, perform in multiple shows a year, and compete in 1-3 competitions. Auditions were held in the spring prior to the 2010-2011 season.

Welcome to the new school year! This email contains some helpful information and reminders.

The WAIS PTA has a new website! Check it out at www.waispta.txpta.org. It will be updated throughout the year with events, volunteer opportunities, and documents that will help you stay in touch with what is happening at the school. PTA Big Form Due - Tuesday, Sept. 7 - Turn in to your oldest child's homeroom or the main office. (A large envelope was sent home with forms from the school and PTA.) By completing the Big Form you can join the PTA, sign-up to receive the PTA newsletters, purchase WAIS Spirit Store items, Birthday Marquee, Walk of Fame Bricks, Directory copies and purchase ads. If you haven't seen the PTA Big Form you may download another copy. WAIS Big Form (English) - WAIS Big Form (Spanish).

WAIS Directory Ads - Due Sept. 13
Honor your child or promote your business with an ad in the school directory that reaches over 900 homes in the area of the school. See more information, prices and download the Ad Form. The PTA will be sending home one complimentary directory to each WAIS family.

PTA Newsletter - The Westchester Wildchatter - The PTA produces a newsletter that is sent home with the 6-week progress reports. It is also e-mailed to the PTA members, available on the PTA website and paper copies will be available in the school offices. Download a copy of the first issue: August 2010 (English) - August 2010 (Spanish) If you have articles or events that you would like included in upcoming issues, e-mail Sophie Haci at waisnews@gmail.com.

Become a part of the PTA Board or a Committee! This is a great way to be an active part of your child's education and to stay in touch with what is happening at the school. View the open opportunities. If you are interested in finding out more information about the PTA Board or a Committee join us Sept. 16 at 6:30 p.m. for the first board meeting.

Interested in volunteering at the school? The first step is to complete the SBISD volunteer form. THIS IS AN ANNUAL PROCESS! So even if you did this last year, you must do it again. If you plan to volunteer for PTA events, class field trips or other school activities where you'll interact with the students, you must have completed this process first. We hope that you have made plans to join us on Friday evening for the Westchester 8th grade completion ceremony at 7:00 pm (students to arrive at 6:30 pm), but even more importantly we hope that your 8th grader will be staying after for the dance, which will immediately follow the ceremony and end at 10:00 pm sharp. Parents, please be prompt in picking up your children.

We have put a lot of effort into making this dance a very special occasion for our kids, with a Hollywood styled theme, decorations, catered food, photographers and a DJ.

WAIS Teacher Appreciation Luncheon, Tues., May 25 - Volunteers and Donations Needed

Please join us in expressing our support and gratitude for WAIS teachers and staff. The PTA is hosting our last Teacher Appreciation Lunch of the school year on Tuesday, May 25 in the school library. This is a change from the original date of Tuesday, May 18.

We will be serving a fajitas lunch. Your help is needed in any of the following ways:

Donate a dessert or veggie tray. These items can be brought to the library or the office on Tuesday morning.
Donate $5-10 to cover the food costs. Place your money (checks payable to WAIS PTA) in an envelope and drop off at the main office.
Volunteer your time on the day of the lunch to help setup, serve, and cleanup during any of the following shifts:

8:30-10:30 set-up

10:30-12:30 serving

12:30-2:30 final serving and cleanup

A Few WAIS Items/Activities to Note

Book Fair: Wed., May 12, Thursday, May 13 and Friday, May 14. Open 8:30-3:30. Also open Thursday evening 6:30-8:30. Students will have some opportunities to visit and purchse books. Great books available for summer reading!

We need volunteers during any of those times - they can just come & plan to stay 1-2 hours. There is a cashier provided by Southwest Publishers - so our job is to reshelf books and to assist parents & students searching for books. We're in B320 (not the library) which is across from the auditorium. Email marialice.lindig@springbranchisd.com if you can volunteer to help.

WAIS Yearbooks - A few yearbooks are still available. They are $50 each, and available by stopping in the school offices. Checks should be made out to WAIS.

Field Day - Friday, May 14 - The PTA will be serving all WAIS students hot dogs, chips and snow cones during the lunch hours to celebrate the end of the school year.

Odyssey of the Mind Fundraiser - May 18 at Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant

The 7th grade WAIS Odyssey of the Mind team came in first place at the Texas State Odyssey of the Mind tournament, and advanced to the Odyssey World Finals at Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI on May 26-29.

They are having a "funraiser" to help with their travel expenses at Sweet Tomatoes Restaurant (it's located on the eastbound (southside) feeder to I-10 between Campbell and Voss) on Tuesday, May 18 between 5-8 pm. You can help by printing a copy of the attached flyer, going to the restaurant, buying a meal and a drink, and Sweet Tomatoes will donate 20% to their fundraising efforts.

What could be easier, right? The catch is that you have to BRING THE FLYER INCLUDED AT THIS LINK WITH YOU, because they don't allow flyers to be handed out at the door and the team doesn't get credit if you don't have the flyer with you. Come out and support your WAIS Texas State Odyssey of the Mind champions! Hope to see you there at Sweet Tomatoes on May 18.

Campus Beautification Volunteers Needed!

To all WAIS parents, students, and staff - Campus Beautification Committee needs your help!

Five cubic yards of mulch will be delivered to one Westchester front entrance TOMORROW after school. That's about the equivalent of 20-25 bags of mulch.

The object of mulching is to protect all our plants from the summer heat and conserve moisture. Very important for survival.

We will deeply mulch all the beds and plant containers on one side of the school beginning at 4:30 p.m. and going 'til we get too hot, tired and/or hungry. Saturday morning, beginning at 9:00 a.m., we will try to finish up this load. A second 5 cubic yard load will be delivered next Friday on the other front entrance of the school. So we will repeat the process next week on the other half of the school.

Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Work times:

Friday May 7th 4:30 p.m. (or whenever the mulch arrives) onward (join us anytime)

Saturday May 8th 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

and

Friday May 14th 4:30 p.m. onward

Saturday May 15th 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.

Donations of Prom Style Dresses Needed for 8th Grade Graduation Ceremony

Dear WAIS Parents,

The eighth grade girls are wearing "prom" style dresses to the eighth grade completion ceremony on Friday, May 21st. We would like to make sure that all our girls have an appropriate dress to wear. If you have any gently used dresses that are appropriate (not strapless or too low-cut), would you please donate them to our eighth grade girls? You can drop them off with Loan Pham at the middle school entrance before school on Friday, April 30 or any morning during the week of May 3-7. She will be at the curb between 7:25 and 8:00 am on those mornings.

If you would like to make special arrangements to drop dresses off, you can email her at: loancamary95@hotmail.com. You can also leave the dresses with Ana or Melissa in the main office, please mention that these dresses are for the 8th grade students and not the Seniors.

Any dresses not selected by one of our eighth-graders will be donated to charity. We greatly appreciate your assistance. We want all our eighth-graders to have a wonderful time at their dance and completion ceremony.

Get Involved with PTA next year!

There are many opportunities to participate in PTA’s efforts to enhance the educational experience at WAIS, which can accommodate busy schedules. Many of the positions will offer support or training from the previous chair or other PTA board members.

Publish an E-newsletter which is e-mailed to PTA members every 6 weeks alternating with the printed version i.e. when the report cards are issued. Previous knowledge of publisher or other layout program is helpful.

Website - Web master for the WAIS PTA website www.waispta.org, makes site updates, post information and forms, maintain the membership database, send out e-blasts for the e-mail newsletter and other announcements. Previous knowledge of working with a web site content management system or basic html is required.

Advertising - Advertise PTA events using various communication channels.

Spanish Liaison - Promote and translate communication for the Spanish community

Fundraising Chair - Organizing various fund raising events for PTA projects

Fundraising Committee member - Organizing various fund raising events for PTA projects

Write a Check - Organize and process the annual ‘Write a Check’ fundraising campaign – October-January

Spirit Store (t-shirts) - Design, order and conduct sales events for WAIS T-shirts, sweatshirts and other spirit items - Yearlong

District Improvement Team - Provide parental input toward SBISD plans for a better educational environment for our students.

Grade-Level Representatives
Acts as a liaison between PTA and parent, communicate grade relevant information to parents in coordination with the grade teacher representatives, organize grade specific events. More than one parent can represent a grade, teams work very well.

6th Grage - Create poster/flyers, coordinate refreshments with grade teachers, decorate cafeteria, solicit parent volunteers and/or venders, and delegate tasks for volunteers before, during and after 6th grade dance/fundraiser. Coordinate field trips with teacher rep (you may be asked to recruit parent volunteers, if necessary). Partner with TAW Committee during luncheon events to ensure successful outcome. Attend PTA board meetings/sponsored events, if schedule permits.

7th Grade - Support grade level communications, related activities and fundraising.

SAVE THE DATE - WAIS International Festival and Garage Sale

Save the Date for the Annual WAIS International Festival and Garage Sale

International Festival and WAIS 10th Anniversary Celebration
Friday, April 23: Students will visit country booths during their lunch hour. The booths will be hosted by a country representative and will contain information about the culture, geography, food samples, art, crafts and much more. Each student will be given a "passport" where they will receive a stamp for answering a question which can be answered by viewing the booth. The students will attend a pep rally that will be held in the afternoon to celebrate the WAIS 10th Anniversary Celebration.

Saturday, April 24: The day will kick off with International Performances in the WAIS auditorium from 9:00 - 10:30 AM. All students, parents, and the community are welcome to attend. The county booths will be open for visiting from 10:30 AM - 12 PM. All are welcome to "travel" the world and visit with the ambassadors.

Garage Sale

Saturday, April 24:

Garage Sale Booth Set up opens at 6 AM. Spaces are still available to reserve. A small fee for the space and tables is required. You keep all of the profit from the sale of your items. Download the forms: English / Spanish

Garage sale is open to the students, families and the community from 8AM - 12PM.

The PTO will be hosting booths for WAIS apparel and grade levels will each have themed raffle baskets where tickets can be purchased. The clubs will also be hosting food, drink and other activity fundraising booths. The Class of 2011 will be holding a car wash. Stop by and get your car cleaned for a good cause while you shop or visit the International booths.

Cheer on the WAIS Odyssey of the Mind teams this Saturday, April 17

The Odyssey of the Mind Texas State Tournament is this Saturday, April 17 from 9 am to 4 pm at Spring Woods High School (on the SW corner of Gesner and Hammerly). Westchester Academy will be well represented by a total of 4 teams (2 from the high school and 2 from the middle school). The WAIS teams will be competing at the following times:

Middle School problem 4 – 10:20 am

High School problem 1 – 11:00 am

Middle School problem 5 – 1:15 pm

High School problem 5 – 2:15 pm

Please come out and support our teams! Plan to arrive at Spring Woods at least 30 minutes prior to the performances to allow time for parking and finding the correct venue. Good luck at State!

First of all, a big thank you to those of you who have already committed to participate in creating a heritage booth for the International Fair 2010!

For those who have not yet signed up - this is your chance to make your country shine!

Please sign up your ambassador student, yourself and your country today and join our planning meeting on Wednesday, April 7 in the library starting at 6:30 pm.

You'll meet parents and students who were involved last year and we'll inform you about everything that goes into creating a booth, the procedures on the days of the event etc.

I wanted to let you know about a great opportunity for our juniors! The Texas Education Agency has partnered with the College Board and ACT to offer free testing vouchers for every junior to take either the SAT or ACT at no charge. The vouchers must be used this testing year and can be used to get a reimbursement for a test for which your child has already registered or to sign up for an upcoming test. Our hope is that every WAIS junior will take advantage of this offer. Students can use the vouchers on these tests:

At this time, we have vouchers available for the SAT. We anticipate receiving vouchers for the ACT next week. If you would like a voucher number to register your child for the May 1 test date (registration deadline is today) please contact me or Stephanie Gutierrez for the voucher number today. You do not need to come in for a form since we can email you the number or give it to you over the phone. Please note- College Board has indicated that students in Texas with a College Board account were to receive an email with voucher information. Most of the students I’ve asked did not receive an email. I do know that the email was from “SAT” and the title of the email referred to a free testing opportunity for juniors in Texas. You might want to have your student check their Spam email to see if that is the reason they’ve not yet seen the message.
