Med Club Blood Drive a Success!

Dear Parents and Faculty,

The Med Club’s blood drive at Westchester turned out to be a huge success! By the end of the day, we received an astounding 83 pints of blood. I would like to congratulate all of our wonderful donors who were willing to face such a huge commitment and also the Med Club members, Dr. Sigworth, and the blood drive staff who made it all possible. We had an amazing and smooth turnout. Thank you to all!

Teachers are now collecting items for the different grade level baskets! Bring in your donation any day this week.

Westchester Academy for International Studies (WAIS) is hosting an International Fair and community garage sale Saturday, April 5 from 8:00 AM until 1:00 PM. Families in our neighborhood are invited to rent a booth, which means the family keeps the proceeds from the sales. Or, you may also donate garage sale items to the WAIS students, who are hosting garage sale booths as class fundraisers. Student clubs will be selling refreshments and the Foreign Language classes will be showcasing their activities and accomplishments.

PTA Committee: Walk of Fame Bricks

This chair is responsible for managing the Walk of Fame personally engraved bricks.

Duties: Update the Brick Order flier at the beginning of the year with the correct contact info. (See the online Filing Cabinet for a copy of the form.) Make copies for both offices and upload the new document to the web site. Be sure there is a flier in the first day of school packet. Market the program through fliers, posters and newsletter items. Collect orders for bricks during the fall semester. In the Spring, send a list of the brick orders to the production company and ask them to send the completed bricks to the installation company. Ensure installation is complete and all bricks are represented.

PTA Committee: Grade Level Rep

This is a new position for 2007-2008 created to facilitate communication among our parents, students and faculty. The concept assumes that each grade level rep can bring news about their grade level to the school and round up volunteers for grade-specific activities. Duties: Be the point person for your grade level. Build a list of names, phone numbers and email addresses of those parents and students who wish to be involved. Talk with the grade level teachers on how the PTA can help. End of Year Picnics -- In May, the PTA sponsors EOY picnics for the students. Each grade level rep will work with the parents in their school -- middle or upper -- to ensure food is covered. We usually do hot dogs, chips, drink and sno-cones. The Honor Society was helpful in 2006-2007 in setup, serving and cleanup. Eighth Grade Dance -- You will need your list of parents for producing the eighth grade dance at the end of the year. PTA Committee: Teacher Rep

This chair is always held by a teacher at WAIS and acts as a liaison between the faculty and the PTA.

Duties: Talk with the faculty about classroom and instructional needs, either monetary or volunteer hours. Propose requests to the PTA and participate in implementation.

Notes: The PTA constantly strives to reach out to our faculty. We are ready to support requests -- we just need to be made aware of what those are.

PTA Committee: Family Day

The chair organizes and hosts the annual Fall Family Day. Family Day is always held the day after the homecoming game and carries an open invitation to all Westchester alumni and current families. The PTA serves free hot dogs, chips and drinks to everyone. Student clubs are encouraged to set up booth or exhibits to showcase their clubs and talents. There are also games for the families to play.

Duties: Recruit people to be in charge of the different areas. Here is a detailed outline of our preparation for the 2006 Family Day event. Talk to the clubs about participation. Promote the event.

Notes: The turnout for this event could be greater if we marketed it more. The more we can get student clubs to participate, the higher our turnout. We may want to consider holding Spirit Days in the week leading up to the event where students can buy shirts or enter a raffle for a free shirt to be given away during the event. We would also benefit from reaching out to the Westchester Alumni Association.
